Hungary’s Military Occupation in 1944-45, 2025

Hungarian National Archives, Budapest, Hungary
An interactive visualization tracing the passage of the front line through Hungarian settlements in 1944–45.

The visualization is built on several interconnected datasets, including civil death registers and detailed records of military movements, and uses a 1:50,000-scale historical map from 1941 as its geographical foundation.

An interactive timeline allows users to follow the occupation of settlements and the shifting front line either manually or through automatic playback.

The database can also be explored through text search and a range of filters, making it possible to approach the material from both geographical and thematic perspectives. Selecting a settlement opens a detailed data card together with the related digitised archival documents. The interface shows the number of days the settlement was exposed to military activity, the number of people who died during the war, and a dedicated timeline of local combat events.

For individual dates, users can examine the military units involved on both the attacking and defending sides, the type and intensity of manoeuvres, and the number of armoured vehicles deployed.
